World Premiere of Quartet+Student Side-by-Side Performance Project

World premiere in Temperance, MichiganOn April 15, 2008, the Euclid Quartet and the string students of Bedford Public Schools in Temperance, Michigan, performed the world premiere of James Leatherbarrow's Symphonies of String Instruments.  The performance received an enthusiastic standing ovation.

This new side-by-side work was commissioned by the Euclid Quartet, to enable the Quartet to perform along-side string students of all levels.  The unique structure of the new piece allows it to be performed by the Quartet along with up to three different levels of student string orchestras, or combinations of the different levels.  While the inner movements offer each orchestra the chance to play one-at-a-time with the Quartet, the outer movements combine the full force of the three orchestras along with the quartet for a stirring opening and finale.

Tenth Anniversary Beethoven Cycle

(or, EQ + 10 = Beethoven x 16)

For the 10th Anniversary of the Euclid Quartet, we're celebrating throughout the 2008-2009 season with our first-ever Beethoven Cycle.  His music represents everything that moved us to pick up our bows in the first place.  So what better way to mark a mile-stone anniversary, than with this mile-stone endeavor?  In six concerts spread throughout the season, we'll perform all 16 string quartets from the pen of the undisputed master of the form.

New Residency for the Euclid Quartet

Indiana University South BendIn August of 2007, the Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts at Indiana University South Bend appointed the Euclid Quartet as its Resident String Quartet. In their role with the University, the Quartet will perform concerts on the university campus and in the community, teach private lessons, coach chamber music, and develop a program for pre-formed student string quartets, while maintaining a schedule of performances nationwide.

At the University, the Euclid Quartet heads the string program, which gives every student a great deal of personal attention. The members of the quartet maintain private studios and give individual weekly lessons. All string students have the opportunity to study chamber music, coached by the members of the Euclid Quartet, as well as to perform contemporary works written by the composition department. The Quartet also oversees a program for pre-formed student string quartets, at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Members of these student quartets are eligible for special scholarships.

The Ernestine M. Raclin School of the Arts is widely recognized for its excellence throughout Indiana University, attracting attention regionally, nationally, and internationally. Students interacting with members of the arts faculty have the opportunity to study, grow, and develop within a wide range of traditional programs and professional studies.

For over 30 years, Indiana University South Bend has hosted a resident string quartet. Prior to the Euclid Quartet’s appointment in 2007, this post was held by the International String Quartet (1974-1980), the Chester String Quartet (1980-2002), and the Avalon Quartet (2003-2007).
